CUT THE COST OF WATERING – NOT FLORAL DISPLAYS

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=906

Stunning floral
displays that demand a lower frequency and amount of water can be
achieved by specifying the inclusion into composts of water
management additive Celcote this Spring, say crop protection company
Certis.

“It’s a proven
solution for cutting the costs associated with frequent watering,”
says the firm’s Martin Donnelly. “Yet, it won’t compromise
plant quality or the visual impact delivered by hanging baskets, pots
and other containerised plant display features during this 2012
Olympics season.”

Already widely used by
nurseries producing for garden centres and retailers, compost treated
with Celcote enables more water to be retained and crucially be plant
available without causing waterlogging thus enabling a significant
reduction in both water volume used and application frequency, both
of which cost money. In trials as much as a 66% reduction in watering
requirements was achieved.

This is not only the
year of the Olympics, it will also be the year of drought orders in
many parts of the UK so using Celcote not only saves money but also
reduces unnecessary use of water.

specific advice please contact Certis on 01980 676501.

COST SAVINGS BOOST LARGE AREA MOWERS APPEAL;

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=905

The Triflex large area
mower from Ryetec has already proved itself as a credible option to
cylinder and rotary type mowers since its launch in 2004, but it’s
capacity to cut grass of any length to a close high quality finish in
one pass without unsightly rows or lumps of cut grass afterward even
in wet conditions means it leaves conventional cylinder mowers and
fine cut rotaries way behind.

In the latest round of reduced cuts now
being forced on local authorities in an effort to cut costs the
Triflex is ideal, not only does it leave a good finish but the
reduced costs of maintenance and the ease of use compared to
conventional cylinder mowers and the better cutting results in longer
grass compared to roller mowers in a reduced number of annual cuts
give any Triflex user a big advantage.

Triflex operators know that
whatever the weather, growing season or ground conditions, they will
always be able to cut grass, leave a reasonable finish, and keep up
with rounds even in a fast growing season. latest converts,
Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Grounds Maintenance Services are
looking forward to the 2012 season, now they are Triflex equipped as
the 2011 season tackled with a combination of cylinders and rotaries
is best forgotten!

BAILOY UNVEILS BRAND NEW WALLMOUNT IRRIGATION SYSTEM

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=904

Golf irrigation system specialist’s GTI EC wallmount offers
straightforward, cost-effective irrigation solution perfect for
retrofit and new installs

Bailoy
Products launches its latest golf irrigation control system at
Harrogate Week.

The
GTI EC is a simple-to-use, cost-effective wall-mounted irrigation
control system. Bailoy – best known for its computer-operated GTI
Gemini-Trident Irrigation system – created this product for all
those who want a modern solution with more features than a basic
wallmount, but which is less expensive than a full PC system.

Importantly,
GTI EC has been designed as the perfect upgrade or replacement for
existing SC3000 and TW2 wallmount controllers.

Bailoy,
of course, designed and built the Toro-branded SC3000 three-wire
system in the early 1980s and saw it successfully used for many years
– who better, therefore, to introduce its successor? And thanks to
the GTI EC’s flexibility, the system also seamlessly
upgrades/replaces the two-wire TW2 from Watermation.

The
GTI EC also offers an extremely effective, value-for-money solution
for new irrigation installations of a more straightforward design.

For
example, smaller golf clubs and courses, and nine-hole courses or
municipal sites with less complex watering needs, will appreciate its
cost-effectiveness in these economically tough times. It’s equally
adaptable for irrigating sports surfaces such as football and rugby
pitches, tennis courts and bowing greens, too; as well as commercial
landscapes and large residential gardens. Better yet, the GTI EC is
completely upgradable to the full GTI PC system if required at a
later date.

While
it’s undoubtedly a clever piece of kit and superior to other
wallmounts, Bailoy is proud to claim that GTI EC isn’t a complex
system – not only does this means it’s budget-friendly, but it’s
also bound to be a breath of fresh air for anyone bamboozled by
complex, computer-operated irrigation systems! The development team
reckon it’s the simplest and quickest system to set up currently
available. It can also be left to run for very long periods without
the need to attend to it or reprogram.

So,
how does it work? As the below graphic shows, the GTI EC system works
from the main unit via a wallmount controller located in the pump
house. After installation and initial set up, the user is guided
through a series of short multiple-choice screens to set the system
according to their needs, and then it’s ready to irrigate.

Ten
straightforward watering programmes and other simplified features
ensure GTI EC is foolproof. It can be operated from the wallmount
itself or – as an added bonus – users can opt to access the
system via an internet-enabled iPad or tablet device, or through an
existing office computer. This option mirrors the GTI EC screen on
the remote device, giving the user control from any location on or
off site. Remote technical support is also available from the Bailoy
head office.

Commenting
on the launch of the GTI EC, Bailoy’s managing director Adam
Lovejoy says: “We’re thrilled to launch our new wallmount system
at the show. Whether clubs are looking for a cost-effective solution
due to budgetary cuts or shy away from complex computer-operated
systems, the GTI EC fills a real gap in the market across both
retrofits and new installations. We’re confident course managers
and other turf professionals will love its user-friendly features,
and look forward to showing these off firsthand to Harrogate Week
visitors.

GTI EC FEATURES AND BENEFITS AT A GLANCE

10-inch touch-screen colour LCD display provides intuitive
	interaction.

Presents all tasks in small steps, meaning anyone can operate the
	system.

Uses location names to identify stations, so forget all those
	hard-to-remember decoder numbers!

Allows seamless control away from the controller location in the
	pump house.

A flow-management tree allows precise allocation of flow, to ensure
uniform coverage for each course area.

Automatically logs water consumption to ensure users keep within
	water budgets.

Allows optional local and worldwide system access via any

RONACRETE ECO TREE PIT – NEW PRODUCT FROM RONACRETE

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=903

Ronacrete
has introduced a new product to its range of
resin paving products. Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
is not only
helpful to the environment by facilitating the planting of trees in
urban areas but has other sustainable features – a truly ‘green’
product.

Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit has a concentrated formulation - reducing packaging,
emissions and transportation costs. Ronacrete Eco Tree Pit is SuDS
compliant, its high porosity allowing the tree to feed and remain
healthy, it also allows for root movement so the tree can grow. The
resin also has unique hydrophilic properties which not only mean that
it can be laid in wet/inclement conditions but that recycled
aggregate can be used straight after it has been washed. Because
there is no need for a complicated drying procedure this makes using
recycled aggregates a much more practical proposition. Also as the
aggregate used does not need to be dry there is no necessity for the
burning of fossil fuels, again reducing the amount of carbon
emissions into the atmosphere.

“Our
research and development team has been working for some time to
formulate a more sustainable tree pit resin and we are delighted with
the result. Ronacrete Eco Tree Pit reduces carbon emissions, fuel
usage, packaging and waste materials while providing the ideal
protection for trees which are so beneficial to the environment,
particularly in urban areas.”

What is Ronacrete Eco
Tree Pit?
Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
is
a natural aggregate finish surround for planted trees in public and
private areas. Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
is
an
alternative to traditional costly metal grilles which are difficult
to walk on and can become a storage space for hazardous and unsavoury
items of
litter. Unlike the grilles it has no salvage value so will not be
stolen or damaged.

The
Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
surrounds
the tree in a solid yet flexible construction that is easily swept
clean and its porous structure allows rainwater to seep immediately
through to the root system feeding the tree and reducing the burden
of surface water drainage. The system is suitable for walking on
(less slippery than grating) and for light vehicle traffic.

Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
system
reduces the carbon footprint by:

Decreasing
transport costs
All
weather application – reduces downtime, no need to return to site
Concentrated
formulation – weighs less, takes up less space meaning fewer trips
	and uses less fuel
Manufactured
	in the UK

Less
resources and waste
Concentrated
	formulation means less packaging required
Reduced
	packaging means less waste
Waste
	from packaging is recycled
Packaging
is made from completely recyclable materials

Lower
emissions
Containers
	made from bio-polymers
No
dried aggregates required – so no burning of fossil fuels
Container
designed for automated filling - quicker and more energy efficient

Why is
tree planting so important in urban areas?
Trees
are beautiful to behold – providing homes for a variety of
wildlife. Their large leaf canopies slow down rainwater’s progress
– reducing flash flooding.

They
absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as part of photosynthesis,
cleaning the air and reducing temperatures.

Trees
release oxygen into the atmosphere, catch dust and pollutants in
their leaves, reduce smog formation and absorb radiant energy from
the sun, reducing the
incidence of asthma, skin cancer and stress-related illness.

The
Ronacrete
Eco Tree Pit
system
can help make all these things possible.

Sustainable
features
Concentrated
formulation reducing emissions, packaging and fuel
Highly
	porous allowing tree to feed
	–
	SuDs
	compliant
Dried
	aggregates not essential –

	Manufactured
in the UK – no air and sea freight

Other key features
Hydrophilic,

RANSOMES JACOBSEN LAUNCH NEW RANGE OF CUSHMAN TURF UTILITY VEHICLES

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=901

Ipswich, Suffolk (January
24, 2012)
Ransomes Jacobsen, a Textron Inc. (NYSE: TXT) company, presented a
new range of turf utility vehicles at BTME 2012 with the launch of
the Cushman Hauler.

Cushman
is a
name synonymous with rugged, versatile utility vehicles; they
introduced the first purpose designed utility vehicle for the golf
sector – the Turf-Truckster – in 1969 and this latest range of
vehicles continues that heritage.

The Hauler range offers
numerous features designed to make daily maintenance on golf courses
more efficient. A limited slip differential, which comes as standard,
provides greatly improved traction on wet or loose terrain, and
minimises possible turf damage from wheel slip.

Each Hauler features a
standard steel brush guard and integrated front bumper to protect the
body panels, paintwork and vehicle components from the wear of daily
use and abuse. The Hauler’s roof and tubular-steel support struts
are designed to offer maximum visibility and protection from the
elements, and also provide a modern, stylish look. Large headlights
integrated into the vehicle’s cowl are specially designed and
positioned for maximum light dispersion in front of, and around, the
vehicle’s front providing high visibility at dawn and dusk.

There are four different
models with various payload capacities and powertrain options:

Hauler 800 — The
Cushman Hauler 800 is available with either a quiet, zero-emissions
48-volt electric drivetrain or a high-torque, fuel-efficient 9.7 kW
(13hp) Kawasaki engine with a hemispheric combustion chamber. With a
maximum capacity of 363 kg, a 0.17m3
cargo bed and bench seating for two, the Hauler 800 is an ideal
runabout vehicle for smaller tasks and transporting greenkeeping
staff around the course.

Hauler 1000 — For
larger jobs that require additional payload, the Cushman Hauler 1000
provides a total capacity of 454 kg and a larger cargo bed of 0.27m3.
The Hauler 1000 is fully electric, with a zero-emissions 48-volt
electric drivetrain and eight six-volt batteries providing more power
and extended range between charges. For tasks that require even more
cargo space, the Hauler 1000 can be built with an optional 0.42m3
aluminium
cargo bed. The Hauler 1000’s bench seat can accommodate two people.

Hauler 1200 — The
Cushman Hauler 1200 is the largest vehicle in the Hauler range, with
a 544 kg capacity and a 0.27m3
cargo
bed. The Hauler 1200 is powered by a powerful yet fuel-efficient 9.7
kW (13hp) Kawasaki engine, and seats up to two people. The vehicle is
also offered with an optional 0.42m3
aluminium
cargo bed to handle jobs that require more cargo space.

Hauler 1200X — When
the job requires a vehicle that can navigate over and through the
toughest terrain, look to the Cushman Hauler 1200X. The Hauler 1200X
is available as a fully electric model powered by a 48-volt
drivetrain that offers 15.2 cm of ground clearance and a total
carrying capacity of 454 kg. Alternatively, the 9.7 kW (13hp)
petrol-engined model offers 13.5 cm of ground clearance with a
carrying capacity 363 kg. Both models feature rugged tyres and a
0.27m3
cargo
bed; for jobs that require more capacity, the vehicle is also offered
with an optional 0.42m3
aluminium
cargo bed.

To meet specific needs,
Cushman Haulers can be customised with a wide variety of options and
accessories, ranging from towing implements, locking glove boxes and
powered carrying beds to enclosed cabs and ball-picker cages on some
models.

NEW DCR RAKE UNVEILED

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=899

SCH
(Supplies) Ltd have developed a new adaptation to their popular
De-Compaction Rake (DCR), specifically to combat problems of algae
build up at the base of 3G sports surfaces.

These
surfaces can be prone to ‘caking’ together below the visible
area, and if not regularly maintained with the application of
suitable treatments, and combing through to loosen the material, can
attract algae and begin to degrade.

A 70
litre tank dispenses algaecide via a dribble bar. A row of heavy
duty scarifying tines follow immediately, de-compacting and opening
the surface up to allow the liquid to penetrate and begin its
essential work. A pair of levelling bars and a brush then follows to
provide the necessary grooming and finish.

The
unit can be towed or 3 point mounted. The standard model has a
working width of 1.3 meters, with an overall width of 1.7 meters.
SCH say they can supply various widths, and suggest a call to their
offices to discuss available sizes or any other bespoke specification
changes the customers may require.

The company is also keen to point out that the tank and dribble bar
adaptation can be provided for customers who are already in
possession of an SCH De-Compaction Rake.

NEW R&D MANAGER APPOINTED BY SEED SPECIALISTS

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=893

Specialist
grass seed breeder Barenbrug has announced the appointment of Dr
David Greenshields as its new research and development manager.

The
appointment follows the departure of Jayne Leyland, who has left for
pastures new after 13 successful years with the Bury St Edmunds-based
business.

Having
joined Barenbrug in May 2008 as regional sales manager for Scotland,
northeast England and Cumbria, David, 33, is already a familiar face
to many customers and is relied upon for his strong technical
expertise.

Boasting
a Master’s degree in Environmental Biology from St Andrews
University in Scotland and a PhD in Plant Genetics from Edinburgh
University, David’s technical and practical knowledge across golf,
sports and amenity applications is now set to benefit customers
nationwide.

Commenting
on his new role, David says: “I’m delighted to take on the
responsibility for our research and development programme. Having
been very heavily involved in our Scottish trials programme, as well
as having a special responsibility for developing the racecourse
sector, I’m looking forward to transferring my work, knowhow and
enthusiasm to the whole of the UK.”

With
David’s solid academic background, he of course believes knowledge
is key to finding grass seed solutions for the future. He adds: “I’m
passionate about our trials, and applied research and development
programme as it’s vital to answering the unique and changing
challenges of the UK turf sector. I can’t wait to start working
with customers in my new capacity and finding solutions to suit their
needs.”

Managing
director Paul Johnson adds: “This is a natural next step for David,
who I’m confident will take our trials, research and development
programme from strength to strength, thanks in particular to his
technical skills.

“Barenbrug has made a significant ongoing investment in this
programme and we’re excited to see how it evolves under David’s
direction. However, Jayne contributed a great deal to its success and
will be sorely missed – I’d like to take this opportunity to
thank her for all her hard work and wish her the very best for the
future.”

SAFETY GUIDANCE ON CLEARING SNOW AND ICE IS WELCOMED

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=892

There are
far too many health and safety myths, which is why clear government guidance for
businesses on what they should and shouldn't do during this snowy and icy period
is to be welcomed, the health and safety advisor and employment law specialist Bibby Consulting & Support has
said.

One of the
biggest misconceptions companies have is that if they attempt to clear paths on
their premises and someone falls they are responsible and liable to an injury
claim.

"The fact
is," says Michael Slade, Managing Director of Bibby Consulting & Support,
“anyone can clear snow and ice to prevent slips and falls without fear of
incurring demands for compensation, but they do need to follow certain
procedures and have cleared the area carefully. I’m pleased to see that the
Directgov website is now giving this guidance to the wider business community,
which is something we have told clients for many
years."

Tips to
ensure maximum health and
safety as temperatures drop include
clearing snow and ice early in the day to prevent it packing together, putting
salt or sand down before nightfall to stop it refreezing overnight, paying extra
attention to steps and steep pathways, and not shovelling the snow into places
that could cause inconvenience. Also, hot water should never be used to clear a
path because if it freezes and turns to invisible and slippery black ice this
will increase the risk of injuries.

"Frustratingly,
health and safety issues are increasingly being blurred by myths," says Slade,
"so any guidance that clears up the confusion is to be welcomed. Essentially,
companies must always make every effort to ensure that their employees operate
in a safe environment. Likewise, the health and safety of customers or anyone
visiting a business's premises should be paramount at all
times."

Senior
managers or company directors who need specialist advice on what their
obligations are during this cold snap can contact Bibby Consulting &
Support’s 24 hour help line on 08453 100 600.

FORBO’S ENTRANCE MATTING PUTS AVIVA STADIUM ON THE FRONT FOOT

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=891

Ireland’s
newest major sporting venue, the inspiring Aviva Stadium, required a
fittingly impressive entrance and exit zone aesthetic. Accommodating
up to 50,000 seated spectators meant issues of safety were key to the
specification process, and the entrance flooring system chosen had to
perform to the highest level functionally as well as aesthetically.
Fortunately, Forbo Flooring System’s
extensive portfolio of entrance matting systems offered the ideal
products for the job. Robust, smartly attractive and with moisture
absorbing qualities for anti-slip safety, Nuway Tuftiguard was used
for the entrance areas.

Replacing
the previous stadium
on the same 6.4-hectare Lansdowne
Road
site, Aviva stadium was designed to host national football and rugby
matches – as well as other events, in the heart of Dublin. With
such an extreme volume of traffic passing through the doors on a
regular basis, the entrance and exits required an entrance matting
system that would withstand intensive use.

As
a joint project between the FAI (Football Association of Ireland) and
IRFU (Ireland Rugby Football Union), with part government funding,
architects Scott
Tallon Walker in conjunction with Populous put together a performance
specification brief, which was put out to tender amongst flooring
contractors to submit details of products that best matched the
specification.

Pat
Kirwan, from
Scott
Tallon Walker
comments: “This
required a heavy duty entrance barrier matting system for both
external and internal use with a construction that allows the product
to be replaced and interchanged to optimise performance, whilst
achieving an aesthetically pleasing appearance.”

Forbo’s
Nuway engineered entrance flooring was finally
approved, after being put forward by Talamat Distributors, as it
exceeded
all the requirements of the specification. In addition, the design
team was familiar with the product and its reliable performance
qualities, having used the products before on numerous commercial
projects.

Andrew
Scollan, Sales Executive at Talamat Distributors, said: “We have
worked with Forbo Flooring Systems for more than 30 years and have no
hesitation in recommending their products to our clients. In this
particular instance, Nuway was an ideal fit for the project,
providing a premium finish to the entrance system.”

Nuway
Heavy Duty Classic entrance matting with a grey pile wiper strip and
an aluminium scraper bar – to effectively scrape and retain soil
and moisture - was installed in all of the internal premium entrance
areas on the ground floor of the east and south stands and the third
floor of the west stand, along with the players and VIP entrance
areas. Furthermore, all general level turnstiles on the first floor
used a Nuway Tuftiguard Plain with an unbuffed wiper strip and an
aluminium scraper bar.

Forbo’s
Nuway Tuftiguard engineered flooring products were ideally suited to
this application, as the rigid engineered mats are able to scrape off
the worst of the soil and moisture tracked in on the soles of shoes
or wheeled vehicles in heavy traffic areas.

Bill
Enright, Operations Manager
at Aviva Stadium, states: “With the amount of people entering the
stadium at any one time, safety is our number one concern. Having
had Nuway Tuftiguard installed, we can now be confident that the
entrance areas will effectively keep the floor surfaces clean and dry
to minimise the likelihood of anyone slipping, and provide an
appropriate amount of slip-resistance to prevent any hazards.”

Pat
Kirwan continues: “We have always been very impressed
with Forbo’s professional service and high quality performing
products.”

NEWDIGATE CRICKET CLUB BOWLED OVER BY NEW NOTTS SPORT INSTALLATION!

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=890

A village
cricket club which has added an artificial turf extension to its bowling end is
so pleased with the Notts Sport-designed facility that it’s now hoping to
commission another project from the company.

Notts Sport,
the world’s leading supplier of synthetic cricket surfacing systems, was behind
the installation of the artificial turf run-ups to the twin nets at Newdigate
Cricket Club in Surrey.

The nets are
used constantly throughout the summer by adults and juniors, but during periods
of wet weather the club previously had to close the facility due to the muddy
conditions. Now the new non-slip Notts Sport artificial turf surface means the
nets can be used whatever the weather.

John Callcut,
Junior Cricket and Volunteer Co-ordinator for the club, explains: “When the
ground was wet the bowlers’ run-ups became muddy and the mud transferred to the
bowling ends and made them slippery and dangerous. We were then forced to close
the nets on safety grounds.

“We ordered
artificial run-ups from Notts Sports which have completely solved the
problem.”

The project,
which included a new sight screen at the end of the run-ups and rodent proof
netting, was carried out by Notts Sport approved installers S & C Slatter,
who impressed the club with their professional approach.

Newdigate
Cricket Club is now hoping to install new batting ends and replacement poles in
time for next season and will be making a funding application to Sport England's
Inspire Fund in February 2012.

John added: “We
will certainly use Notts Sports again as we have been very pleased with the new
installation and their attention to detail.”

Shaun Patrick,
chairman of Notts Sport, said: “Notts Sport is a big backer of the grassroots
game, and so it is a real delight to be part of the transformation of the
practice nets at Newdigate Cricket Club.

“It’s fantastic
to have helped provide a facility which will help cricketers of all ages
practise throughout the season, whatever the weather, for years to
come.”

Notts Sport,
which has 27 years’
experience in the synthetic sports and play surfacing industry, is the world’s
leading supplier of non-turf cricket pitch systems for coaching, practice and
match play.

The
company offers a choice of seven artificial pitches – including the NottsBase D
System and Envelope System, which can be designed and installed as matchplay or
practice facilities – plus bespoke systems and a range of portable training mats
for indoor and outdoor use.

NEW KORO BY IMANTS 1500 FIELD TOP MAKER PROVES ITS WORTH IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=889

Sports
Turf Surfaces (STS) a leading sports surface contractor in the Czech
Republic is one of the first companies in Europe to purchase the new
model of modular Koro by Imants Field Top Maker 1500, through Campey
Turf Care Systems dealer, Profigrass S.R.O.

Owner
and Managing Director of Sports Turf Surfaces, Mr Jan Rouzek is
delighted with the quality of work produced by the machine and claims
“It has exceeded my expectations. Although I had seen a
demonstration of a Koro Field Top Maker two years ago in Prague when
Campey along with Profigrass held a working demonstration day, this
new version is even better and best of all my customers are very
pleased with the results too.”

Tomas
Chytka is the representative from Profigrass responsible for
arranging the earlier demonstration. “STS has a particular interest
in football stadiums and smaller sports surface arenas. Professional
football pitch management is about providing a surface which will
cope with a whole range of activity in the build-up before, during
and after a match. The new Koro Field Top Maker (FTM) 1500 is ideal
for renovating this type of surface which has areas of intense usage.
It is a heavy duty fraise mower for removing unwanted surface matter
such as poa-annua, thatch and weeds to a depth of 50mm. STS has
discovered that the FTM can play a vital role in the overall success
of a professional pitch maintenance programme.”

The
FTM 1500 is designed for mid-range tractors from 45 - 60hp so is an
excellent choice for sports pitches and golf fairways, whereas the
1200 version is more suitable for compact tractors of 35 -40 hp and
works extremely well on both fine turf golf greens and tees, tennis
courts and outfield sports turf areas. It also can be fitted with a
deep scarification rotor to scarify/linear aerate up to 50mm deep
with 2mm or 3mm blades.

Promoting
best practice in markets outside of the UK is a primary objective for
companies looking for success on the International stage. So for
Campey Turf Care the sale of the Koro Field Top maker 1500 to a
company in the Czech Republic is an important step forward.

This
is the latest model to be added to the Koro by Imants range and was
seen for the first time in the UK at BTME.

The
1200 and 1500 Koro by Imants Field Top Makers are now available in
modular format. Either machine can be supplied with an elevator for
dispersal of all spoil into a vehicle / trailer running alongside.
This can easily be removed in less than five minutes and a high lift
collector slotted into its place.

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=888

Working closely with FEGGA during
the past year has provided Campey Turf Care Systems with a wealth of
opportunities to spread its knowledge and experience of turf
maintenance and renovation techniques across a wide spectrum of
European sporting facilities.

Managing
Director Richard Campey has extended the general sponsorship for
FEGGA for another year and the company will also be an official
sponsor of the annual FEGGA conference on the 16th
– 19th
February 2012 to be held in Prague, Czech Republic.

The successful European
Demonstration Tour which Campey held in 2010 provided an ideal
platform for all those involved in sports including FEGGA members to
come and see a whole fleet of sports pitch renovation and maintenance
equipment in action. As the level of enthusiasm in promoting best
sporting practice in Europe remains very positive, Campey Turf Care

CRUCIAL SURVEY FOR CFE NEEDS RECORD FARMER SUPPORT

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=887

Farmers are being urged to reveal how they are protecting
and enhancing the agricultural landscape before a major initiative is reviewed
by the Government.
On February 20, a Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE)
survey will be issued to 5,500 randomly selected farmers across England to find
out how much land is managed outside of paid agri-environment
schemes.

Jim Egan, chair of the campaign’s delivery group, said the
results of this survey would play a huge role in informing both campaign
partners and Farming Minister Jim Paice of what farmers and the CFE have
achieved when it gets reviewed in the summer.

“We need a strong farming voice to demonstrate that land
can and is being managed
responsibly without regulation. Without the evidence from this survey,
Government may not be able to support voluntary industry-wide approaches in the
future,” added Mr Egan.

The survey of 11 questions will take approximately 15
minutes to complete and farmers should answer these based on their land
management for the current 2011 to 2012 cropping year. Reminders will be sent to
those who have not returned the survey within two weeks of it being
issued.

Yorkshire arable farmer Richard Bramley said: “There really
has never been a better time to show support for the CFE’s voluntary approach to
managing your farm. It is vital that all growers, who receive a February survey,
complete the form and return it – for the good of the campaign and for your own
benefit. A few minutes spent form filling now could help reduce the risk of many
years of burdensome and expensive regulation.

“With discussions on ‘greening measures’ at the forefront
of the CAP debate and the importance placed on demonstrating value for money to
the public, this will provide the information needed to demonstrate the
excellent environmental work being carried out voluntarily by English
farmers.”
Results will be available in
mid-May.

NEW APPOINTMENT UNDERLINES JAPANESE KNOTWEED CONTROL’S GROWTH IN THE SOUTH

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=886

Leading treatment specialist, Japanese Knotweed Control has expanded its team in
the south and south east with the appointment of Sven Janssen (34).

Sven joins the company's London office with
responsibility for delivering treatment programmes for its growing number of
public sector and private clients experiencing knotweed problems.

Sven, from North London, has worked in the
horticultural sector for the past ten years, initially involved in a number of
conservation projects overseas, before returning to the UK. He previously worked
with Japanese Knotweed Control's regional director for the south and south east,
Dee Laverty and, as her workload increased with a number of London borough
council projects, Sven was delighted to join the business as a full time
treatment specialist.

Following comprehensive training in the
treatment methods for non-native invasive plants, including the company's
innovative stem injection technique, Sven is now involved in the hands-on
delivery of treatment programmes throughout the capital and beyond. Although
local authority work accounts for most of the company's business in the region,
domestic projects are increasing, particularly amongst home owners looking to
buy or sell properties with a knotweed problem.

Commenting on this latest appointment joint
managing director David Layland said: "We opened our London office last year in
order to more effectively service our growing amount of work in the capital.
Through referrals and recommendations our name has become increasingly
synonymous with successful treatment programmes throughout the south east and
this is reflected in our expansion of the team with the recent appointment of
Sven."

Savvy
entrepreneurs Richard and Jim George who spurned a £160,000 deal on
the Dragons’ Den TV series have seen sales of their anti-rot
fencing post sleeves soar by 75%.

The
brothers, from Malvern, Worcestershire, stunned the panel of
multi-millionaires on the hit BBC 2 programme when they declined four
offers for a stake in their Gloucestershire-based business last
summer.

Following
the show, their website crashed after being inundated with enquiries
about the bitumen-lined sleeves which extend the life of fence posts
by keeping preservatives in and decay out.

“Sales
to our existing customers have jumped by 75%, mainly because members
of the public started asking for PostSaver after they had seen the
product on the show. We’ve also added many new stockists to our
national supplier network,” said Richard George.

“We
thought we had made the wrong decision but now we’re not so sure.

feel vindicated by our decision to reject the cash,” he added.

NEW STANDARDS FOR SUSTAINABILITY SET

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=883

Dura
Composites, a leading manufacturer of wood composite products, will
announce at Ecobuild that it has secured Forest Stewardship Council
(FSC) sustainability accreditation and established the sustainability
credentials of its market-leading wood plastic composite (WPC)
products such as Dura Deck.

In
the first of two initiatives Dura Composites has secured FSC chain of
custody certification, guaranteeing the use of FSC-certified forests
in the manufacture of its WPC products Dura Deck and Dura Cladding
when specified by the customer.

Secondly,
Dura Composites has had independent verification of the
sustainability of Dura Deck, recording 87% recycled content and a
carbon footprint lower than comparable softwood and hardwood decking.

The
report, produced by CERAM UK, showed that against wooden decking Dura
Deck has a lower overall lifetime cost compared to both hardwood and
softwood decking, with a low carbon footprint of 1.3 kgCO2/kg before
installation.

Stuart
Burns, Managing Director of Dura Composites said: “This recognition
of our product credentials confirms Dura Composites as a world leader
in wood plastic composite design, manufacture and now sustainability.
Many people would wrongly think that a wood plastic composite product
can’t be as ‘green’ as a timber product. But it’s clear our
Dura Deck product can meet the highest sustainability specifications
and outperform timber in service.”
Dura
Composites expects its FSC-certified products will attract new
customers for whom proven sustainability is essential.

COMPANY MAKES 300-MILE DELIVERY TO SAVE SAND DUNES

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=882

British
Wild Flower Plants in North Burlingham, the largest grower of native
plants in the UK, has delivered Marram and Lyme grass to reclaim
coastline on a South Tyneside beach 300 miles away.

A
total of 268,000 Marram and Lyme Grass plants were grown by the
company last summer for South Tyneside Council, and have now been
transported to Sandhaven Beach in South Shields.

Once
in place, the grass which can grow up to one metre high, will bind
the sand and hold the dunes in place using its deep roots. The dunes
are a well-known feature of the South Shields coastline and the
grasses grown by British Wild Flower Plants will enhance the
coastline for visitors and wildlife for years to come.

Growing
the plants for previous winners of ‘best in show’ at the RHS
Chelsea Flower Show, British Wild Flower Plants has over 380 species
of wild flower plants available at their six acre nursery. The
business has worked on a wide range of projects such as planting
schemes for local authorities and private gardeners wishing to
enhance their garden's wildlife.

South
Tyneside Council awarded the contract to the Norfolk company due to
their previous experience of restoration projects along the river
Tyne and on the riverside banks following a competitive procurement
exercise.

Linda
Laxton, owner of British Wild Flower Plants is delighted to be
working on this large coastal reclamation scheme. “The seed was
collected from a nearby site last summer so that the plants we grow
and deliver will have the same genetic make-up and should establish
quickly,” she said. “These plants are very hardy so can withstand
harsh weather and also attracts wildlife so are an important part of
the eco-system.

“We
had to grow 268,000 plants in our nurseries which will now be
individually planted at Sandhaven Beach to stabilise the sand and to
stop it from shifting.
“It’s nice to be doing our bit to
protect a beautiful coastline.”

SCHOOL SITES SPORTS CLUBS GET WELCOME FUNDING BOOST

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=878

New Government and Lottery
funding to provide a community sports club at every secondary school
in England is great news for boosting youth participation in sport,
according to leading synthetic surfacing supplier Notts Sport.

Under the five-year youth and
community sport strategy announced by Sport England and the Culture
Secretary Jeremy Hunt, every one of the 4,000 secondary schools in
England will be offered a community sports club on its site as part
of a £1 billion investment into grassroots sports participation.

The announcement has been
welcomed by Notts Sport Chairman Shaun Patrick, who said it was a
positive step towards encouraging young people to take up sport –
and continue participating in it throughout their lives.

Shaun commented: “Having
been involved with the creation of sports facilities for schools and
local communities for many years, I’ve long held the view that if
young people have access to first-class facilities and coaching
throughout those crucial teenage years, then sport is much more
likely to become a lifelong lifestyle choice.

“Indeed, sport is a great
way to tackle a whole host of health and social problems, from
obesity and depression to educational under-achievement and
anti-social behaviour – and I passionately believe that providing
the right environment is vital if we are to inspire greater
participation in sport among young people.

“We cannot let the
challenging economic climate stand in the way of this generation of
young people getting access to the sports facilities they need and
deserve – and that’s why here at Notts Sport we have introduced
Fast Track Funding, which allows schools and councils to provide
state-of-the art sports pitches at little or no upfront cost.”

With Fast Track Funding, Notts
Sport works closely with the customer to design the bespoke sports
facility that’s ideal for their requirements, with options
including Multi-Use Games Areas (MUGAs), 3G artificial football
pitches, hockey pitches and tennis courts.

Instead of the customer
spending months or years applying for grants and waiting for funding,
Notts Sport will provide a flexible funding solution with repayments
spread over an agreed period to suit their specific budget.

So depending on the customer’s
requirements, Notts Sport could provide full funding for the facility
up front or supply part of the cost to top up existing funds.

Most sports facilities are
able to generate significant revenue through community use, and this
income can be used to pay for a considerable proportion, if not all,
of the cost of projects delivered under the scheme.

“By making sure the funds
are available to provide the right facilities for young people, they
stand a much better chance of enjoying sport now and continuing
participation in sport into adulthood, enjoying all the benefits an
active lifestyle can bring,” added Shaun.

Notts Sport designed sports
facilities are the cost-effective way to provide a wide range of
sports and activities in one self-contained area, and are proven to
be long-lasting options designed to minimise life costs for the
operators.

The company, which has over 27
years’ experience in the sports and play surfacing sector, also
assures full quality control throughout the installation through its
free project management service.

WATERLOGGED PITCHES NO LONGER STOP PLAY

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=877

Compacted,
waterlogged playing fields are a thing of the past for one Norfolk
school after it invested in a Toro ProCore 648 aerator.

Town
Close House Preparatory School in Norwich bought its grounds
maintenance in-house after head groundsman, Chris King, joined in
mid-2010. As part of his drive to reduce compaction and waterlogging
across the playing fields and grounds in general, Chris chose the
ProCore 648 to bring about some dramatic improvements.

As
Chris explains: “We had a limited budget, but I’ve used Toro
throughout my career and felt the 648 was ideal. We have three rugby
pitches and a cricket square, which had been poorly maintained over
the years.

“The
first rugby pitch is particularly prone to compaction and gets quite
wet, but now we’ve started aerating it’s as dry as a bone. We’ve
been using it on our main lawn, too, which gets a hammering
throughout the year and even has a bouncy castle put on it in summer,
causing compaction.”

Sport
plays a major part of school life at Town Close, whose pupils are
aged between three and 13. Having invested in specialist
cricket and rugby coaches to enthuse the children, Chris’ keenness
to invest in grounds maintenance was fully supported by bursar Benita
Ogg, who gave the Toro deal the green light.

“Rugby
and cricket are very important to the school,” Chris reveals. “But
there’s no point in investing in the playing standard unless you
invest in the facilities, too. The ProCore will pay for itself in two
to three years and bring long-term savings. Sports teachers have
already noticed a difference and said how dry the field is.

“We
often have problems turning our rugby pitches around in time for use
as cricket outfields because they’re still wet and then get a lot
of wear and tear in the summer. But the ProCore will solve that. We
couldn’t be happier with it.”

GOLF CLUB TEAM IS HAPPY TO BE IN THE RED

http://www.landscapeandamenity.com/index.php?cmd=article&id=876

Since
arriving at 18-hole Essex club Thorndon Park in 2006, head
greenkeeper Robert George has slowly but surely been turning the
course machinery Toro red. And with the latest machinery replacement
deal arrivals, he’s almost achieved that aim.

“When
I arrived at Thorndon Park in February 2006 there was a mish-mash of
machinery and it was all pretty decrepit,” Robert recalls. “I’ve
used Toro throughout my career and so started to switch us to Toro in
June the same year. We’re pretty much red all over now!”

The
club’s new arrivals include four Greensmaster 3250-D riding
greensmowers, four Greensmaster 1000 pedestrian greensmowers, a
Groundsmaster 4700-D rotary mower and Reelmaster 3100-D Sidewinder
mower, with shifting cutting units.

With
Thorndon Park spanning 240 acres – including an impressive
five-acre lake and 18th century woodland – it’s clear the
£181,000 fleet has its work cut out keeping the course immaculately
maintained. “We stick with Toro mowers for quality of cut,”
Robert continues. “Our members demand a high level of presentation
– to achieve that takes a lot of kit, and Toro enables me to do
that efficiently and without any headaches.”

While
these latest arrivals are like-for-like replacements, the club has
invested in additional machines. “We only had two 3250-Ds before,
but we’ve now extended this to four. It’s such a versatile
machine. It does a variety of jobs, plus cuts down the time and
manpower otherwise required to do them.”

Thorndon
Park is considering investing further in its Toro fleet later in
2012. “Come summer we are due to replace our two fairway mowers,”
Robert reveals. “The new groomer brushes for the fairways look
brilliant, so I’ll certainly be considering those.

“We’ll
also possibly look at replacing our sprayer and Workman utility
vehicle. That’s what I like about Toro – it always moves forward.
There’s always something new, whether it’s the cutting units or
the way the machines are powered.”
