The first phase of the construction programme to modernise Stratford Railway Station, the main transport link to the epicentre of the 2012 Olympic Games , has been completed. Stratford Regional Station and the tracks that serve it are being upgraded in three phases so as to improve accessibility and capacity.

The key objective is to build larger decluttered platforms which are both robust to withstand the beating from 120,000 Olympic visitors each morning and aesthetically pleasing to leave a legacy once the games are over.

Gaysha Specialist Surfaces, experts in resin bound and resilient paving solutions, was approached by Network Rail to come up with a durable surface for the platforms and public areas that would cope with the significant increase in passenger numbers.

Working around the clock to ensure minimum disruption, Gaysha laid 1,700 square metres of Ayton Tripave®, a highly durable, rapid cure and waterproof surfacing based on technically advanced methyl methacrylate (MMA) resin technology. It is anti-slip, a crucial requirement for platform applications, and is one of the few products that can be laid on mastic asphalt. Network Rail chose a grey finish for the two platforms that were upgraded in the first phase.
The refurbishment of Stratford Regional Station is vital to ensure that congestion is minimised during the Olympics but is also an important element in revitalising the East End Of London During the Olympic Games Network Rail is expecting over a hundred thousand passengers to use the station during morning peak periods and the surfacing has to be durable to cope with this.

The second phase of work, comprising a further 700 square metres of Tripave® surfacing, commences early this year and the station is expected to be finished by the end of the year, meaning passengers can experience the benefits nearly two years before the Games.

Gaysha Specialist Surfaces was established in 2005 as the specialist arm of Gaysha Building, a leading contractor in the construction sector carrying out major commercial refurbishment works. Its surfacing solutions which it controls from formulation and manufacture through to installation combines durability and practicality. Armed with the May Gurney brands Clearmac® permeable resin bound paving and the Tripave® slip resistant system any specialist surfacing need can be met.
