The Yorkshire seaside resort of Scarborough recently benefited from a £2.8 million regeneration of its historic harbour, which involved an entire public realm re-design, designed by landscape architects, LDA Design, with extensive new promenade lighting by Woodhouse. The lighting scheme, designed by consultants, Speirs & Major Associates, had the aim of opening up previously uninviting areas, such as Vincent’s Pier and North Wharf, during the hours of darkness. The design team also wanted to avoid a conventional road lighting solution for the area, which would have been too visually obtrusive.

Most of the 13.2-metre lighting masts around Scarborough’s Harbour have three lighting components. Two graceful outreach arms at different heights support Woodhouse Geo Disc lanterns – a smaller 70w BLT lantern at low level illuminates the pedestrian walkway and seating areas with a gentle blue wash, while a more powerful 150w CDM-T white lamp lights the carriageway to BS/EN light levels. In addition to this dual lighting solution, each mast is topped by a 1.8-metre high ‘light wand’, customdesigned by MARL International using long-life, low-maintenance.
