BROCKHOLES – THE NATURAL PLAY STOP!
To become an alternative motorway rest stop is one ambition of a bold new nature development situated just off the M6 near Preston. A Lancashire Wildlife Trust nature reserve, Brockholes boasts a floating visitor village, a network of pathways, a wide range of activities to engage visitors and two naturally themed play spaces with plans afoot to develop a further four. Keen to use equipment that reflects the natural ethos of the site and inspirational designs, Brockholes have selected Timberplay as the exclusive supplier to the pioneering site. Brockholes was historically the site of a sand and gravel quarry and the Lancashire Wildlife Trust wanted to reflect the history within one of these play spaces. As a result the ‘Brockholes Play Quarry’ uses excavation and building equipment, with extensive gravel play. Kath Knight, General Manager at Brockholes comments:- "With Brockholes we wanted to create a nature reserve that appealed to families. We aim to foster relationships with young people and children in order to nurture the custodians of the future, as such play is a fundamental part of what will attract this key audience and motivate them to visit again and again. With Timberplay we were able to develop designs and source products that fitted the objectives of Brockholes well, utilising natural resources and creating inspirational play spaces to help children connect with the site." As a site that consists predominately of wetland and marsh the design of the playground and the subsequent installation had to be mindful of the limitations of the environment. In addition to Brockholes Quarry the site also has ‘Hills and Hollows’, a collection of innovative swings all positioned to give excellent views to the children using the equipment. The landscaping provides great opportunities for play, leaping off the mounds or negotiating the hills. In addition to Brockholes Play Quarry there is also a play area known as ‘Hills and Hollows’, a collection of innovative swings for all ages nestled within a playful, undulating landscape which reflects the local landscape character. This quirky space provides great opportunities for play and creates a special sense of place.
